For years, we’ve run our simulator on outdated machines, largely Mac Mini computers, which were excellent in their time but now have software compatibility issues, failing hardware, and a limited capacity for custom scripting and automation.

Before most missions, we would spend hours identifying and troubleshooting software problems, swapping computers out for repair, and figuring workarounds to make our simulation as shatter-proof as possible, given our equipment. We’re proud to say that all that is going away: WE'RE UPDATING! And you can help!

When donating to the CLC Lockport (below) you can flag your donation for our IT Upgrades capital campaign. Here are some things we’re working on:

• We’re currently engaged in a comprehensive IT refitting of our simulator, to make your experience completely immersive! Our ongoing project has us replacing 35 legacy Mac computers at the core of our simulator operation with custom-configured Windows workstations. These stations are tailored for our audio and video tools, and for seamless integration with our proprietary Challenger Learning Center mission simulator software. We’re excited about the upgrade to new Windows machines because we can:
  • Use command line overrides to eliminate non-immersive elements native to consumer operating systems, keeping our simulator environment locked down and uninterrupted, to enhance the experience of participants.
  • Write custom scripts to more accurately coordinate our multi-monitor simulator displays
  • Run BIOS-level startup routines that makes each station mission-ready at all times, allowing people to join the mission mid-way or to switch to a more suitable station
  • Create automation sequences that integrate third party voice communications software into the mission experience
• We’re also upgrading our peripheral hardware, replacing unfamiliar trackpad technology with mouse-controlled systems complemented by high-resolution tap and touch monitors, which are more user-friendly for student participants, and more in line with expectations of future technology.
• Lastly, we’re just beginning the process of creating additional simulator experiences, beyond our 3 existing Challenger-branded missions. We’re developing escape room scenarios, elementary school missions, corporate team-building experiences, and more, all supported by unique technical configurations, software integration, and specially produced audio and visual elements – all funded under our IT Upgrades project.
